BERLIN, May 29 (Reuters) - The corpse of Marxist activist Rosa Luxemburg has almost certainly been found in Berlin 90 years after her death, a forensic expert said on Friday.
Michael Tsokos, the head of forensic medicine at Berlin's Charite hospital, told Reuters he was "90 percent certain" that a body of a woman found in the hospital is Luxemburg.
"Everything points to that," Tsokos told Reuters. "The only thing missing is the DNA proof."
He said they were hoping to obtain a personal item of Luxemburg in order to be able to compare to determine if the DNA from the corpse matches.
The body was only found by chance as he was working on putting together an exhibit, Tsokos said.
Born in Poland in 1871, the Jewish Marxist Luxemburg became a German citizen in 1898.
She was one of the most important representatives of the left-wing socialist, anti-militarist, and internationalist positions in the German Social Democratic Party before 1918.
She was repeatedly imprisoned for revolutionary and anti-war statements. After taking part in an unsuccessful revolution in Berlin, she was murdered in 1919 by a quasi-governmental militia and her body dumped in the Landwehr canal.
Joern Schuetrumpf, an historian and a Luxemburg biographer, told Reuters there was strong evidence that the corpse -- which was missing its head, hands, and feet -- was Luxemburg's.
A body said to be Luxemburg's was buried in 1919, Schuetrumpf said. He said authorities "wanted to get a body under ground as soon as possible" even though it was known during the autopsy of that body that it was not Luxemburg.
Schuetrumpf said there was chaos at the time with clashes between communists and para-military organisations.
The Social Democractic leaders of the revolution considered Luxemburg and her comrade Karl Liebknecht to be threats to the young republic. The two founded the German Communist Party on January 1, 1919 and were murdered two weeks later.
Luxemburg, Liebknecht, and Wilhelm Pieck, the leaders of the German Communist Party, were first arrested and taken in for questioning at the Adlon Hotel in Berlin.
German soldiers escorted Luxemburg and Liebknecht out of the building, knocking them unconscious. Pieck managed to escape, while the unconscious bodies of Luxemburg and Liebknecht were driven away in a German military jeep.
They were shot and thrown into the canal by the same circles of militarist Freikorps (Volunteer Corps) that later openly supported the National Socialists' seizure of power.

BERLIN (AFP) — On croyait Rosa Luxemburg enterrée à Berlin depuis 1919 mais le cadavre de cette icône assassinée du socialisme allemand, pourrait avoir été retrouvé dans un hôpital, rapporte vendredi l'hebdomadaire Der Spiegel.
Un mystérieux corps de femme a en effet été découvert dans un cercueil en bois, dans une pièce souterraine de l'Institut médico-légal de l'hôpital Charité, qui présente des "similitudes stupéfiantes avec Rosa Luxemburg", a déclaré au magazine le directeur de l'Institut, Michael Tsokos.
Selon les examens réalisés, ce cadavre resté longtemps immergé était celui d'une femme de 40 à 50 ans souffrant d'arthrose, d'une malformation de la hanche et dont les jambes étaient de longueurs différentes.
Autant de signes qui caractérisaient "Rosa la Rouge", figure de proue de l'extrême gauche, tuée le 15 janvier 1919 à 47 ans par la milice paramilitaire contre-révolutionnaire et dont le corps avait été jeté dans un canal à Berlin.
Le cadavre retrouvé à l'Institut médico-légal - qui serait dans un état de conservation relativement bon, "gris" et "dur comme du bois" tel un corps de cire selon le Spiegel - n'a plus ni tête ni pieds ni mains. Ce qui semble cohérent s'il s'agit de Rosa Luxemburg, relève M. Tsokos, car son corps avait été lesté de pierres pour mieux couler, selon des témoignages d'époque.
M. Tsokos doute donc ouvertement que la tombe berlinoise renferme l'authentique Rosa, qui prônait la grève politique des masses contre la guerre et la bourgeoisie.
Le compte-rendu d'autopsie avant l'enterrement du 13 juin 1919 était d'ailleurs truffé de bizarreries, dit-il, signalant explicitement qu'il n'y avait ni anomalie sur la longueur des jambes ni malformation de la hanche et n'évoquant aucun impact de coup de crosse ou de balle.
Un laboratoire spécialisé a daté au carbone 14 le mystérieux corps retrouvé et selon son chef Matthias Hüls, "il peut tout à fait s'agir de Rosa Luxemburg".
Mais les comparaisons génétiques sont difficiles: un timbre collé par Rosa Luxemburg n'a pas fourni assez de matière utilisable et les légistes berlinois recherchent toujours une nièce, qui vivrait en Pologne, ajoute l'hebdomadaire.
Créateurs de la Ligue spartakiste, Rosa Luxemburg et Karl Liebknecht avaient été assassinés le 15 janvier 1919. Ce double assassinat et la répression anti-révolutionnaire scellèrent la rupture entre sociaux-démocrates (SPD) et communistes.
A Berlin, la tombe de Rosa Luxemburg, théoricienne du marxisme et partisane de l'antimilitarisme, reste un lieu de pèlerinage où se rassemblent chaque année des milliers de personnes à l'anniversaire de sa mort.
La Fondation Rosa-Luxemburg, proche du parti de la gauche radicale Die Linke, a exprimé vendredi sa "consternation" et appelé le gouvernement à clarifier l'affaire au plus vite.
