Books on Rosa Luxemburg? Empty Books on Rosa Luxemburg?

Post  RJHall Wed Feb 10, 2010 3:32 am

Hi, I am new to this Forum though I have been a fan of Rosa Luxemburg's writings for many years.

What are any good books on Rosa Luxemburg? Like, is the recent Rosa and the Wolves by Patricia Stanley good? Other than the biography by Paul Frolich, Rosa Luxemburg, Her Life and Work (and the novel Rosa by Jonathan Rabb, which loosely ties Rosa's corpse to a fictional story), I have read only books by her rather than books about her. Am I missing something I should read?

    Thanks,

    RJHall

P.S. I am an American who now lives in the country of Luxembourg, which is unfortunately no relation to Rosa! Though it is not far from Marx's birthplace, Trier.

There's another famous biography, by J. P. Nettl, that is worth reading.

Her friend Mathilde Jacob wrote some memories about Rosa Luxemburg, published as "An Intimate Portrait".

Maybe you already know the "Rosa Luxemburg Reader" :

Thanks! I did not know of the Jacob memoir; it looks interesting, though unfortunately it seems to be out of print. The Nettl biography is like 2 or 3 volumes and I have never yet felt like reading it all, but perhaps I should someday. And of course I have the "Rosa Luxemburg Reader", as it is the principal though not the only book I have in mind when I think of writings by her rather than about her. (It also has a very good looking picture of her on the cover! I love you )

Not just about her specifically but also books following her political views would be very interesting to me too. Are there any books expressing a "Luxemburgist" take on later historical events, like Kronstadt, World War II, Stalin, or Vietnam for example? (The earthquake in Haiti made me think immediately of her article on "Martinique", on the hypocrisy of the imperialist governments' and mainstream media's accounts of the natural disaster while ignoring their disastrous imperialist and capitalist relations with the island.) Or modern issues like George W. Bush, the Global War on Terror, Obama, peak oil, etc.?

    Thanks again!

In my opinion, the best book on Rosa Luxemburg was writed by Lelio Basso in 1967 (in italian, in spanish it was published in 1976, and I don´t know when it was in english). Perhaps you can get it in http://www.internazionaleleliobasso.it/

    Hi RJHall,

First off, welcom to the forum, hope you will stay and contribute to what must become a larger discussion in all languages.

I think you wrote to us at the ILN because your story sounds familiar.

As for books on her... besides the ones already mentioned I only know one but it is in French (maybe you speak that language is it spoken in Luxembourg) : Rosa Luxembourg, la rose rouge written by the luxemburgist Alain Guillerm. He also wrote a book on Luxemburgism Le Luxemburgisme aujourd'hui, Rosa Luxembourg et les conseils ouvriers

If you want to know her better on the personal level, a good idea would be to read her letters. Many of them are published in French but also in English. For Xmas, I got "The letters of Rosa Luxemburg" edited by Stephen Eric Browner. It is very interesting as I can see what were her emotions and thoughts when she wrote such book as Reform or Revolution?

Finally, on texts on recent issues analyzed from a Luxemburgist perspective... some comrades are trying to build a Luxemburgist alternative to both Capitalism, mere Reformism and Leninism. Such projects, no matter how limited, tries to produce texts and analyses on recent events. Some examples :

    - Alternativa Proletaria (Spain) with a bulletin

    - Critique Sociale, a journal in French but not linked to any group

    - Démocratie Communiste (France)

    - International Luxemburgist Network (International) with the bulletin Mass Strike in English and Spanish and soon in French

For example, I am right now working on an article on Haiti for the latter...

For a larger approach, this forum is open to all those in a general agreement with Luxemburg's idea. Its mean weaknesses is that it is mostly in Spanish and very few people are active in it (these two problems are linked, the most active users are Spanish speakers). Nevertheless the point is to have a ver large discussion with folks from any group or individually active from all over the world.

    Your contribution is welcomed

Thanks for the responses! Yes, I did write in to the International Luxemburgist Network last year. I am glad to see that a new Mass Strike is out. More, more, I'm still not satisfied! Very Happy

Yes, here in the country Luxembourg they speak not only French but also German and their own language, Luxembourgish, and many people here speak English as well. Thank goodness, since as an American I only read and speak English very well!! Maybe I ought to learn Spanish though, not just to read more from the Luxemburgists but also to read more about what is happening in South America, with Hugo Chavez and activists in the PSUV in Venezuela and so on.
